Nish shoots niche

Kicking off our coverage of the Melbourne Fashion Festival‘s sparkly last half is Tanisha “Nish” Wookey’s fresh photographic essay of The Grand Annual Object Merchant Ball, a jostling, six-cylinder celebration of niche fashion, art, design and music on the Independent Runways Programme.

Object Merchant is “an ongoing event and production project”, the brainchild of Bella Brown and Lauren Hart McKinnon of Collingwood-based fashion house Be Right Back.

The Grand Annual Object Merchant ball staged in North Melbourne’s Meat Market for the festival was a big-bang blip in a series of pop-up events and hosted spaces featuring independent Australian fashion, art and crafts.

To photograph the Grand Annual, VoxFrocker Tanisha Wookey downed her digital camera and shot on film, a traditional medium she picked for a particular reason: “Shooting film slows me down and makes me more present,” she says.

She shot the event’s runway as a mini narrative: “Object Merchant positions the runway as a functioning marketplace,” Tanisha says. “Garments aren’t just styled and walked, they’re actively for sale. Shot on flash film, the images emphasise that immediacy…”
