Suchmuch with the laughs and joy unbridled. So nice to be among milliners, falling into each other's arms after two bleak years on zoom. In hats. I had forgotten. What an utterly lovely bunch. I joined the judges yonks ago, including the legendary Melissa Jackson, to pick the best 10 from entries around Australia. Last night the culmination - so chuffed - I presented the winner at their gala; Millinery Australia's 2022 Design Award. Darwin designer Belinda Osborne of Peacock Millinery wasn't there to bow but her exquisite "Yin Yang" headpiece of swirling lace fish - one black one white crafted to float-frame the face and respond so elegantly to the theme "Counter balance" - was. Yin Yang is modelled, FYI, by an obliging young beauty from the VRC around the mid-point of this vidlette. The last model is me, fizzing with my customary cringeknackery (whenever a lense is pointed my way) to show this treztrez gorgeous navy halo crafted by the marvellous Felicity NorthEast and lent for the night. Spectrum’s cover story tomorrow tracks all the good and notso ways women are served up for our pop-cult consumption, from Helmut Newton’s babes ‘n bombshells to the gutsy-messy menstrual-bloody breastmilky truths of women now. Among my faves, Martine Gutierrez’s silly bikini shoot loaded with socio-cultural meanings, Lisa Sorgini’s unflinching lens on the “hectic mess” of motherhood, and an explosively talented nextgen including our own Atong Atem (yellow scarfed self portrait here) Kenya's Thandiwe Muriu (colors choreographed to optical shimmers) whose cameras snap and crackle with powerful feminist and post-colonial backstories.
