maticevski

Voxfrock Rookies Atusa Alexandra Moghaddam (words) and Andy Tran (photographs) were at VAMFF’s most evocative show.

Dramatic, sculptural, metrically out of line, charming, flirtatious and yes, it was Maticevski…

Inspired by nature, Toni Maticevski’s black and white palette resembled winter weather, blended with metallics, his aesthetic realised in swathes of drapes, fine tailoring and exaggerated 3D ruffles.

Chiffon blouses accompanied asymmetrical vests and skirts, impeccable multi-layered tailoring made Maticevski’s folds and volumes cascade like dreamy illusions.

“As much as the ruffling is quite pretty and playful, I’m drawn to how much I can simplify a line while still keeping it interesting,” Maticevskil told WWD, referring to his fall collection.

Maticevski’s avant-garde creations were styled with statement accessories: knee-high boots, bejeweled clutches worn as tops on otherwise topless models and most strikingly, oversized sheer cowboy-inspired hats.

Getting all nitty-gritty: beyond the spectacular drapes and gathers, an adequate pocket seam detail or a stamped metal zipper replaced the usual invisible ones in back and side seams.

Male models walked in layered gowns and Maticevski closed his show with a grand purple cape configured with layers and layers of ruffles, lyrical testament to his ‘Fashion without borders’ aesthetic.
