The millinery season is upon us, dear Voxfrockers, and early indicaters suggest fetching little crowns, elegant shards and all manner of Bambi horns, rabbity ears and wings akin to Mercury’s (so ahead of his chic, n’est pas?) are frontline fads (again) for spring 2015.
The Spring Racing Carnival also cranked into first gear at Myer’s Spring Fashion Lunch last week and into second gear at Saturday’s launch of the Yellowglen Terrace marquee, an oh-so-luxe Birdcage alternative for average punters during Flemington’s upcoming Cup Week.
More importantly, and the point of this post, this week is loaded with treats for the millinarily inclined, commencing with the Melbourne Racing Club’s annual Members Millinery Showcase tomorrow night, Wednesday September 16, followed on Thursday, September 17, by The Millinery Association of Australia’s annual MAArvelous Millinery event in the ANZ Pavilion, Victorian Arts Centre.
This year is particularly thrilling for participating milliners: the inaugural MAA design competition winners will be announced. Prizes include acomodation and a workshop intensive with international millinery tutor Tracy Chaplin at her studio in Toulouse (albeit, the winner must make their own way to Paris where part of their prize is a train ticket to Toulouse). Competition judges include MAA president Phillip Rhodes, masterly milliner, and Voxfrock editor, Janice Breen Burns who has judged the fashion competitions at Caulfield and Flemington’s gala events for more than 30 years. Tickets $70, can be booked here. For more more information, zebra.08@bigpond.com, (03) 53426557.
Finally, this week of millinery treats will round off with a Melbourne Cup Carnival Garden Party on Saturday, September 19, hosted by the National Trust of Victoria at its glorious historic Como House. Local millinery connoisseur and vintage fashion aficionado Alison Waters will award best dressed guest and host a parade of hats (example from winter, pictured below) by sculptor and artist Fatemeh Vafaeinejad .
“Fatemeh is a well-known artist and Blake Prize Finalist who has brought her creativity and sculptural skills to the art of millinery,” says Alison, who describes Fatemeh’s hats as “exquisite”. Voxfrock agrees and is reminded of Mercury’s wings, mentioned earlier…
Tickets $65, bookable at bookings@nattrust.com.au. Como House and Garden, Cnr. Williams Rd. and Lechlade Ave., South Yarra.
