Artisan shoe brand Preston Zly’s “Anushka” wedge is meticulously handmade to evoke a complex mix of aesthetic signals: a little bit brogue, a little bit 1970s Moscow, a little bit futurist science fiction, and a nod to “the archetypal winter”. The wedge features traditional punched brogueing and, according to its makers, Johanna Preston and Petr Zly, its “sleek, pointed last belies a roomy interior.”
It is a “curvaceous wedge” that also, “gives extra height while adding comfort with the use of a light rubber in the platform construction.” In time, the shoes’ uppers in either grainy graphite or ivory rub down to a natural-looking peach tone. Numbers are limited so speed is advised. The Anushka is from Preston Zly’s Zima collection, comes in sizes 37 to 42 for $589 and can be bought online or at The Signet Bureau, 165 Gertrude Street in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy.

Bulls-eye designer Arabella Ramsey collaborated with friend and employee, Penny Brown to launch Ryder, a “little sister” collection for her flirty, offbeat, vaguely vintage-esque eponymous brand of girl/woman-wear. Ryder will release in July for spring/summer 13/14. Its dressed-down frocklets and separates are intuitively keyed to teens hyper-sensitive about fashion’s aesthetic messages of cool/hot, in/out, ok/lame. Ryder is indubitably cool, in and ok. Miss Ramsay was reportedly inspired by her family and the Australian outback when she co-designed the new brand. “Arabella also draws from what she wants for her two precious daughters,” says her news release. “To raise them with hopes and dreams in their hearts, absent of all fear, gallivanting off on adventure. These are the girls that Ryder is made for. Bright young things with boundless energy and a desire to see the world.”

‘”Ryder is indubitably cool, in and ok….”

Miss Ramsey’s co-conspirator, Penny Brown, has also brought her experiences growing up by the beach, “barefoot and bohemian”, to bear on Ryder.
Among Ryder’s standouts are shapely summer frocklets with fish and butterfly patterned prints, a story of soft washed plaid checked cotton separates and dresses, and a pair of cropped crochet pants bound to plug in to the fad for crochet bikinis and maillots among the young.
Pictured, Butterfly dress $189,  Fish dress $169, Scarlet crochet pants $229 and Jessie leather shearling jacket $589.
Stockists are still being signed. New stock is due early July.
