ROAR! THE FANTASTIC MR. VOX, DANIEL HUMPHREYS SWEEPS THE LION KING CARPET…
After 17 years on Broadway and a total audience of more than 45 million people in 11 countries, Disney’s The Lion King has returned triumphant to Melbourne’s Regent Theatre. The story, one of theatre’s most beloved, follows a lion cub’s journey into adulthood and his royal destiny, warmly embracing a wide range of races and cultures along the way. This production is slightly pared down, but feels as fresh and vibrant as when it first opened in Australia in 2003. Director Julie Taymor‘s mix of oriental puppetry, poetic movement and Afro-kitsch has lost none of its charm while the set and costumes are breathtaking, particularly their way of revealing a performer’s face, a simple trick that infuses the animal characters with a certain humanity, and the story with integrity.
