YOUR HOLY HUMPDAY TRINITY OF VITAL FROCKY NEWSBITS
HAPPY!
The Voxfrockers are naturally happy as clams but we’re whipped to a fizz by any news of the fashion industry facing, full frontal, its myriad moral responsibilities on this vast and littered planet. Mr. Happy himself Pharrell Williams, for example, via G-Star denim and a bunch of other responsible fashionables, warms our cockles and strums our strings more than most. The first miraculous Raw For The Ocean fashion collection by Pharrell for G-Star has already happened and, this week, another was announced. For those not familiar, G-Star coupled with Bionic Yarns which creates fabrics from recycled plastic waste scooped out of the world’s oceans, and Parley For the Oceans, a creative and activist platform, to develop a denim collection. Backed and fronted by Pharrell, it focuses attention on the vulnerable waters that cover our delicate planet. G-Star’s RAW for the Oceans by Pharrell Williams, in other words, has a moral compass pinging among its smashing denims, tees, bomber jackets, playsuits, accessories and sweaters. POPART FOR POPPETS
Pop, whizz, bang, fun, edgy, irresistable. Designer Inge Holst picked this six-word mantra for her Carousel & Bazaar fashion collection pitched at girls aged six to 12 and, she may just have nailed it. The so-called Tweenie girls market is the trickiest fashion category for any designer to navigate. It’s defeated countless lesser mortals whose hearts have at first swelled at the thrilling challenge to find a solution (too childish, too adult, too old, too sexy, too….), then shrivelled in the clash of competing opinions; adolescent girls, their parents, and the whole dang tut-tutting public-at-large. Inge Holst picked the Pop Art movement to inspire Carousel & Bazaar and appears to have solved a tangle of tricky issues in one bright, boxy, blast of modern compatibles as crisp and covetable (by poppets, parents AND the tut-tutting public) as a prime-time cartoon. www.carouselandbazaar.com
PRIX DE MARIE CLAIRE AWARDS
Oh, for the days, Dear Reader, when frocky people were often whisked in style (First class! Limousines! Five stars!) from city to city for any fashionable kneezup bigger than tea for three. Like, for example, last night’s outrageously lavish Prix De Marie Claire Beauty Awards at Sydney’s Fox Studios. Were we whisked? We were not. If we were, we might conjure here, something of the atmosphere that 25,000 flickering candles, clustered in the inspired manner of a Palace of Versailles, could effect around the roaring, gorgeous, glamperamping chaos of 200 guests (“Australia’s key fashion and beauty personalities….”), 40-odd models and all the trappings of a glinting silver-and-crystal black tie dinner mounted with no apparent expense spared to celebrate the awards’ 10th anniversary. But, like we said, we were not whisked. (Sad face.) We weren’t there. However. We do have this (comparatively dull, but, what can you do?) list of awards handed out on the night, minus, of course, the gushing speeches, hot tears, intrigueing little frocktales, and wild applause. Do your own conjuring….
