#And…action! IMG’s MBFWA or Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia, spring/summer 2013/14, scheduled on the hours, April 8 – 12, has been moved from its idyllic location on the lip of Sydney Harbour at Circular Quay, to a cavernous, character-filled venue known as Carriageworks in Everleigh. In recent years, Carriageworks evolved into an eminently practical location for extravagant fashion events including recent season launches by Myer, complete with their battalions of 40-odd models and vast casts of partying VIPs. Carriageworks was also the site of memorable off-site fashion week frock shows including one of Toni Maticevski’s most magnificent in recent years, staged on a bittercold morning in the venue’s rustic open-air “stables” area, a perfect backdrop for the designer’s diaphanous drifts and fluttering trails of silken “leaves” that year.

#Voxfrocky die-hards without tickets to the trade event, can tune in to JASU.COM, the all-round fashion web-store and multi-media site relaunched last week, for a complete, live-streamed show schedule. Jasu.com partnered with IMG to stream the shows via computers, mobiles and tablets, and to giant screens at Martin Place in Sydney’s CBD, and into Pelicano’s lavish MBFWA VIP bar.

# Models Julia Nobis and Ruby Jean Wilson will walk in the Phoenix Keating show, among others, scheduled at 3 pm. on Thursday, April 11 at MBFWA’s “The Box” venue. Phoenix Keating’s release on “the two most gorgeous women in the world…”, is worth a mention for its breathless prediction that Miss Nonis and Miss Wilson’s appearance will “…(send) industry professionals and die-hard fashionistas alike into a frenzy of anticipation to see these two…showing off beautifully the incredibly unique creations of Phoenix…..” Mercifully, the release did not once revert to the expression “strut their stuff” however, and for this, Voxfrock is eternally grateful.
#Sydney fashion commentator Lorraine Lock (former partner of Australian Fashion Week founder, Simon Lock) tips designer Inder Dhillon will be this year’s “one to watch”. Miss Dhillon, whose 2012 graduate work earned “Student of the Year” and “Outstanding Achievement” awards, will make her runway debut with a 30 piece collection, “Pretty Tomboy” in the Fashion Design StudioTAFE Innovators group show at 2pm., Thursday April 11. Miss Dhillon also has an exhibit in the Powerhouse Museum and attracted the attention of Vogue Italia for her innovative combination of cutting-edge fabric technologies and traditional artisan techniques. “Some of the details are only realised on close inspection, with light and movement of the wearer creating differing effects,” Miss Dhillon was quoted in the release. “The silhouettes are strong but sexy, the fabrics fluid and sheer….it’s very flattering… suggestive but not overt.”
Ms. Lock writes: “In the Pretty Tomboy range ancient techniques that have been handed down through generations of artisans are incorporated into modern designs, layered with luxury fabrics (light-as-air lycra crepe de chine) and overlayed with beading, metal-work and rope. Interestingly, metallic ribbon is woven through textured silks to create allover motifs, while metallic threads have been used on sheers to create texture and depth. Industrial and ethereal. Colours are almost neutral, working as a backdrop, letting the textures and tones speak volumes.”
