The annual Festival de Cannes is the definitive way to experience this fabled French city. Traditionally a festival for independent art-house cinema to recognise those behind the scenes, it has long been overtaken by the celebrity and red carpet phenomena.

Stars are the stars and, unless you’re a die hard film aficionado (like many of the film students who swarm, hustling for last minute tickets) …

…you wouldn’t know who the many film directors, cinematographers, producers, sound and costume designers were even if you bumped into them in the street or at Cannes’ exclusive night clubs such as David Lynch’s Silencio.

The Cannes public are star hungry and anyone in a tuxedo or long slinky dress, emerging from a limousine, or from the Ritz Carlton, is worth a photo.

There is a tradition for locals and visitors alike, to line up overnight with their ladders and portable seats, for a first-hand glimpse of some star. Any star.
